Restoration of stained glass windows at Melton Grange

Melton Grange Restoration Melton Grange

These pictures show Melton Grange in all its glory. The 18th cerntury manor house was converted into a hotel in the 1950's but was closed after a fire in 2001 where it stood derelict and severe vandal damage was caused. The grade II listed building was purchased by a development company in 2007 with the aim of renovating and restoring the building whilst converting it into several luxury apartments. We were asked to restore the magnificent stained glass windows in this building which unfortunately had been badly damaged, below is an outline of the work we are currently undertaking.

Below are before and after images of the first stages of the restoration work to the stained glass windows

The images to the left show the condition of the windows (what's left of them) prior to restoration. Luckily there was one window almost intact to enable us to take conservation rubbings from and to copy the beautiful hand painted flowers on the central diamond shape.

To the left are images showing the 8 windows that were created using the original as a guide for the design and colour of glass. These 8 windows were installed into the metal frames with white putty

The 4 images above show one of the top windows being carefully dismantled ready for the glass to be cleaned, new glass to be cut where needed and re-leaded using the appropriate lead came.

15 windows before further vandal damage took place
The image to the right shows the damage to the windows prior to restoration, these windows were damaged further by vandals before we removed them. They had been previousley installed and held in place with a mix of strong cement mortar and putty which provided problems with the removal, we had to take extreme care not to dammage the soft sandstone mullions.
The images below show the windows being re-installed after restoration, these windows were completely rebuilt bringing them back to their former glory. They were installed into the sandstone mullions and tied on to the new reinforcing bar, they were pointed with a lime mortor to allow the sandstone to breathe and prevent further damage in years to come.
